Pilot your startup solution with the Municipality of Rotterdam to separate, recover and repurpose organic waste

Access to network, potential pilot Deadline passed

Together with The Municipality of Rotterdam, Get In The Ring is looking for organic waste treatment solution providers from around the world to repurpose Rotterdam’s municipal organic waste and create useful value-added products.

Citizens of Rotterdam produce nearly 300 million kilos of waste annually. The municipality collects about 10 million kilos of vegetable, fruit and garden waste from low-rise houses (houses with a garden) every year. In the coming years, this will see an increase to 17 million kilos since the municipality will also collect vegetables, fruit and food scraps from high-rise houses and apartments.

This challenge is an opportunity for novel waste transformation technologies to work alongside the Municipality on piloting their solution to the city of Rotterdam together with local partners such as the Port of Rotterdam, the petrochemical industry and other connected stakeholders in the local ecosystem.

We are looking for advanced waste separation & recovery and alternative waste conversion & new materials technologies. The innovation must comply with high environmental standards, to reduce carbon emissions connected to waste processing.

This challenge is open for disruptive early-stage companies with the aim to do a pilot project.

The Challenge

The municipality of Rotterdam is looking for disruptive technologies to transform mixed organic waste into innovative materials, fuels and chemical components. They are to explore bold solutions that can convert organic municipal waste into treasured resources!

Advanced waste separation & recovery

Separating organic waste from mixed household waste streams enabling material recovery. Sorting and separation of waste fragments at the source or at an industrial waste plant by cascading processes that extract components of the highest value possible.

Example solutions include: AI, machine learning, computer vision, robotics, Hydrolysis, fractionation, enzymatic reactions.

Alternative waste conversion & new materials

Converting organic waste into new materials, chemicals and products such as cellulose, bio chemicals, fibers and fuels that can be repurposed for the pharma, textile, agricultural or energy industry.

Example solutions include: Enzymatic transformations, hydrodeoxygenation, hydrogenolysis and more

What's in it for you?

  • Access to the Municipality of Rotterdam’s network of partners such as the Port of Rotterdam and local investors

  • Pilot project

Additional requirements

This is a global challenge that welcomes solutions from all over the world. Participation requirements are:

  • TRL level between 2-6

  • Capable of providing research regarding the solution and what the output can be

  • Ability to work in Rotterdam with municipal organic waste

  • Reduction of Carbon Emissions in the value chain has a preference

  • The innovation must comply with high environmental standards

  • Willingness to collaborate with the city of Rotterdam to develop a pilot or feasibility study (which will require or eventually require on site activities)
