Gelderland has many great universities that score high internationally. Radboud University, in Nijmegen, was ranked by the QS World University Rankings as the 204th best university in the world in 2018. And Wageningen University was ranked 124th in the QS World University Ranking and 65th in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2016-2017.

The province subsidises starting innovators with regard to consulting, education and entrepreneurship as well as renting business property. Other funding that is available through the regional development company are: the innovation- and energy fund Gelderland for funding innovative SMEs, the participation fund PPM Oost for promising innovative companies and ‘Gelderland voor Innovaties’ for SMEs from the province of Gelderland.

In 2016, they established a new economic board for the region Arnhem-Nijmegen in order to stimulate the economy in the region with a focus on Health, Energy and Food. The economic board consists of the university and universities of applied sciences, municipalities and several big companies in Gelderland.
High scores
They received the European Entrepreneurial Region award, which is granted to EU regions which show an outstanding and innovative entrepreneurial policy strategy, irrespective of their size, wealth and competences. In 2014 regional innovation scoreboard listed Gelderland as an Innovation Follower. This means their innovation score has been between 90% and 120% of the European average in this period. In the 2017 rankings, Gelderland scored as an Innovation Leader -, meaning that innovation performance increased over time.
