Work with KPN to bring connected and automated driving to the market

Pilot contract, access to the Rotterdam Unlocked network and customers Deadline passed

Get in the Ring and KPN are looking for innovative solutions to enable connected automated driving in the smart cities of the future. Within the Concorda project, a European sponsored mission to improve traffic flow and safety on the road, a 5G testing lab has been opened to validate innovative technologies. Multiple partners are aligned such as Ericsson, TU Eindhoven, Tass International and OPNT, to create the future of automated and connected driving.

KPN is the largest telecom and IT service provider in the Netherlands. As they explain it: “Our network is Dutch to the core. We have a clear mission – to help the Netherlands move forward through that network. KPN truly believes in technology and in the power of communication. We are KPN. We are the network that enables the Netherlands to move forward – the network that cares for the Netherlands.” KPN is currently testing the applications of 5G and is preparing to bring this to market, which would allow multiple smart city applications, such as the possibility to realize connected and automated driving. KPN aims to be the frontrunner in this field, and has the ambition to provide an open source network where government parties, traffic controllers, and car manufacturers can make use of, to enable a truly connected city.

THE CHALLENGE

KPN has been working with partners such as Ericsson, TU Eindhoven, Tass International and OPNT to test the possibilities of automated and connected driving. To this end, the first 5G technologies have been activated on KPN’s mobile network and allow tests on the A270 between Helmond and Eindhoven; the 5G field lab. Tests are being done with traffic lights; communicating with cars and alarming them to slow down or speed up. Ambitions go much further; KPN aims to facilitate both vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) (or even individuals by cell phone) as well as vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. This includes; connecting cars with all electronic traffic equipment, data of the traffic control agencies (Rijkswaterstaat), and the mobile network of KPN (of individuals). A key factor is to manage the variable of mixed traffic; automated cars should be able to adapt to unexpected behavior of for example pedestrians and bikers. Ultimately we aim to improve traffic flow and safety on the road. We’re looking for the following solutions;

IN-CAR APPLICATIONS TO OPTIMIZE DRIVING AND SAFETY

Solutions such as; driver diagnostics, computer vision cams, augmented reality dashboards, driver assistance systems and digital registration.

CONNECTED TECHNOLOGY BASED ON AI OR IOT

Solutions that enable connectivity either on 4G or 5G networks, or other disruptive connectivity solutions complementary to 4G or 5G.

TRAFFIC AND FLEET MANAGEMENT

Solutions enabling connectivity from multiple data sources by using for example sensor technologies, not including platform solutions.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU

  • Pilot contract (budget estimated 50k) to test your solution in KPN's 5G Field Lab: currently the A270 from Helmond - Eindhoven

  • Possibility to join ITS European Congress in June 2019 as a partner in the Field Lab to present the outcomes of the tests done so far.

  • Access to the network of KPN and all other partners involved

  • Access to the rest of Rotterdam Unlocked program; a warm welcome to the city including relevant networking engagements and additional meetings with corporates and governments.
