As part of Sustainable Industry Challenge – Chemport Edition and BioMCN are looking for innovative solutions to support BioMCN in their ambition to produce 100% green methanol. By re-using green CO2 to produce green methanol, in combination with green hydrogen, BioMCN could become a CO2 sink and thereby reduce CO2 emissions. We are looking for technologies and solutions that can support BioMCN in this transition by retrofitting their current plant infrastructure and machinery.

 

BioMCN is one of Europe’s largest methanol producers and is the first company in the world to produce and sell industrial quantities of high-quality bio-methanol, a second-generation biofuel. Their production facilities are located at Delfzijl and part of OCI NV.

THE CHALLENGE

We are looking for startups and scaleups that work together with BioMCN to make technical adjustments to the current production facilities at Delfzijl to prepare the facility to make the transition towards the production of 100% green methanol. BioMCN recently ran a pilot in which they replaced 20% of the feedstock with green syngas, which had little effect on the production layout of the plants. However, increasing this to 100% in the upcoming 10-25 years will require significant technological adjustments in the plant infrastructure and machinery. We are looking for solutions that can support in these adjustments taking into account internal mass and heat flows, interesting directions include:

GREEN HYDROGEN

Green solutions to produce Hydrogen, for example, electrolysis or biomass gasification.

Applications for excess heat

Ways to reuse the excess heat produced during BioMCN’s conversion process. These can be both internal, for BioMCN’s use, or external, for example, the city’s use.

Catalyst

Catalyst that can be used to efficiently convert CO2 and H2 into methanol.

Simulation software

Software that can simulate internal mass, heat flows and process conditions of Green methanol production using 100% green syngas, and show areas of improvement. For example, how will the distillation process look like, when 100% green syngas is used as a feedstock. Solutions include software using dynamic process modelling and digital twin simulation.

  • Have a working prototype or demonstrator
