BIOTREM

Bio technology
Consumer Products, bio-based materials, plastic

Description:

Biotrem fights the plastic pollution and opens new business opportunities by developing an innovative production process of bio-based single-use tableware and packaging. Biotrem is a Polish technology company, focusing on the development and implementation of innovative technological solutions and materials for mass production, enabling the manufacturing of single-use products based on commonly available organic raw materials from sustainable sources. Products based on the innovative Biotrem technology are a viable and environmentally friendly alternative to single-use products, among others for tableware and food containers, manufactured from petroleum-derived raw materials, cellulose pulp or chemically treated materials. Biotrem’s mission is to provide innovative, pro-ecological and economically balanced industrial solutions – possible to be used on a global scale – supporting responsible management of natural resources and minimizing negative environmental effects.

The problem
As a global population, we produce approximately 3,5 million tons of waste every day. A significant portion of this waste is disposable plastic packaging. Only approx. 3-5 percent of disposable tableware and take-away food packaging is recycled. The rest is burnt or landfilled at best, but in the worst-case scenario, it pollutes soil and water, seriously endangering the environment and life on Earth. In 2015 over 161 million tons of disposable plastic packaging, take-out containers, and plates, cutlery, cups was produced. Their average degradation time is over 500 years. Products manufactured through the Biotrem technology are an important and effective response to the problem of plastic waste threatening the natural environment. The project also creates new, potentially lucrative and ethical investment opportunities and opens up new chances for the global agricultural and food industry.

The solution
Biotrem is a Polish company – est. in 2012 by Małgorzata Then, CEO and Jerzy Wysocki, CTO and inventor of the Biotrem technology – developing an innovative and patent-protected manufacturing process of single-use products from sustainable organic raw materials – leftovers and by-products of the agri-food industry. Products manufactured through the Biotrem technology are a viable and environmentally friendly alternative to single-use products – i.e. tableware and food packaging – manufactured from oil-derived materials, cellulose pulp or processed fibres. Biotrem’s main product line is fully biodegradable disposable wheat bran tableware. 1 ton of bran can be transformed into over 10,000 plates, bowls or cups.

Cellugy

Chemical, Clean Technology, Nanotechnology

Description:

Cellugy is on its mission to replace fossil-based, single use plastics with biocellulose using 100% renewable resources (eg. plant waste and sucrose)

The problem
Currently, only 14% of global plastics produced are recycled. This low recycling rate is exacerbated by the fact that some packaging applications are impossible to recycle. For example, multi-material packaging which combines plastic with paperboard and metal to offer enhanced performance versus mono-material alternatives. This results in functional benefits such as enhanced barriers against oxygen and moisture, but makes these packaging unrecyclable due to the difficulty to separate the single components. Therefore, there is a need for biomaterial barrier coatings that can be used to design sustainable mono-material packaging solutions which at the end-of-life are easily recyclable in the existing waste stream.

The solution
EcoFLEXY is particularly suitable for packaging since it can be customized in terms of mechanical strength and barrier properties. By adjusting the barrier level and exploiting its resistance to heat equivalent to aluminum, EcoFLEXY solves the holy grail of the packaging world: traditional multi-layer packaging is substituted with EcoFLEXY-coated paperboard, functionally a mono-material. EcoFLEXY is the safest material available to date, fully biodegradable and recyclable. By using sugar surplus as feedstock, we not only help to dispose of millions of tons of waste produced by the sugar industry, but also obtain a significant reduction in the end-product cost. In fact, our cost is levelled to common bioplastics, making it convenient for the pressured packaging industry to switch to EcoFLEXY!

DigiFarmz Smart Agriculture

Agri tech

Description:

Smart agronomic recommendations in plant health for higher yield and profitability with less environmental impact

The problem
Currently, up to 75% of potential yield is lost due to decision errors in plant health and plant nutrition management. Farmers and consultants are unable to make the right decisions regarding which agrochemicals to use, which mixtures, doses, when to perform each application, how many applications are needed, etc. And it all depends a lot on where they are, the genetics they’re using, the date they’re sowing, among other factors. The variables are immense, causing erroneous decisions that consequently generate reduction in yield, and profitability, with excessive use of chemicals.

The solution
DigiFarmz helps agronomists and farmers to manage plant health in soybean by providing parameters for better decision making. Guidance as to what to use (fungicides, mixtures, etc.), when (ideal date of each spray), how much (number of sprays), and anti-resistance management. The constantly expanding database (crowdsourcing + field research) also enables the optimization of resources and investments in farming, contributing to the reduction of the impact on the environment. We are expanding predictive mathematical models beyond soybeans to include corn, cotton, and wheat, as well as herbicides and insecticides.

Daika Wood

Building Materials

Description:

Daika has developed a new material which is 100% natural. The material is composed from natural materials (no plastics or petroleum-based materials) and wood waste particles. We have an initial POC in industrial manufacturing processes. The resulting products retain the unique properties of wood such as warmth, sense and acoustics and can be processed as regular wood. We have targeted consumer products and packaging as the first markets we are starting with.

The problem
Currently, the vast majority of wood waste is not used in a real circular economy. Daika’s materials enable real circular economy of wood waste. We are taking wood waste which is estimated in billions of tons per year (originating form agriculture, industrial and municipal) and combining it with natural materials in a unique chemical process. This creates a new material, Daika wood, which is moldable, cost competitive, can be mass-produced, is sustainable and comes in varying colors/textures. The material can be used in existing manufacturing processes such as extruding and molding and no extensive heat is required (more than half the temperatures used in a typical thermoplastic injection process).

The solution
Products made from Daika’s materials retain the unique properties of wood such as warmth, sense and acoustics and can be processed as regular wood. This is in contrast to current solutions such as wood-like and bio plastics that are are still plastics and wood replacements such as MDF that uses hazardous materials and carcinogenic binders.

LOOP Mission

Food &
Beverages

Description:

Nobody likes to be rejected, not even food. LOOP Mission is a circular economy company that repurposes the outcasts of the food industry.

The problem
One third of the food produced is wasted worldwide. For fruits and vegetables, it’s even more with 45% being thrown away. This food accounts for about one quarter of all water used in the agriculture sector each year, cost billions on dollars and generate 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions annually, mostly from food decomposition in landfills. Meanwhile, more than 800 million people suffer from hunger in the world.

The solution
LOOP Mission gives a second chance to the misfits of the food industry by creating value out of waste. We save perfectly imperfect discarded fruits and vegetables and transform them into awesome cold-pressed juices. To close the loop, our leftover fiber and pulp from juicing is being reused into vegan dog treats and pizza crusts. We also have a line of beers that upcycles day-old bread from bakeries, gin made with potato cuttings from a potato chips company, soaps recycling cooking oils from a vegan fast food chain and fermented probiotic sodas giving a second life to hydrosols, a potent but neglected byproduct of the essential oil industry. Thanks to this business model, we can make clean label food more affordable to consumers while transforming trash into treasure for many actors in the food industry.

Nihon Agri, Inc.

Agriculture

Description:

Nihon Agri, Inc. is a Japanese agricultural start-up that strives to vertically integrate the entire agricultural value chain by engaging in production, import, marketing, and plant variety management of high quality Japanese agricultural varieties. Our agricultural imports from Japan are sold under the brand “ESSENCE” in multiple countries including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Philippine. We are the only company in Japan that provides Japanese agricultural products globally under a single brand; efforts to create a strong brand have been mitigated by the fact that agriculture in Japan is very fragmented, made up of multiple small farmers with limited business knowledge but with a passion to create high quality, innovative products. Our strong management and brand / marketing team, along with a local sales team in each country, are working to support the strong products that are naturally produced out of Japan, and we strive to become the Zespri and Dole of Japan. As above, the major pillar of our business is our plant variety management business. Japan has been known to be the mother of world-famous varieties such as the FUJI apple, MUSCAT grape, TOCHIOTOME strawberry, etc. , all of which are now being used without permission from the original developers due to lack of awareness towards plant variety protection. We see the past spread of varieties as an indicator of potential popularity of further varieties made in Japan. We source multiple varieties from various farmers across Japan, and find users of the varieties overseas; by teaching overseas farmers how to produce high quality agricultural products and securing an end-market through our marketing efforts of ESSENCE, we bring back royalties to the developer in Japan, in which we obtain a part of as well depending on the agreement with the developer. Through our work – production, marketing, branding, plant variety management, and consultation to local farmers – we hope to build a win-win economy in the agricultural business which many have found difficult.

The problem
1. Secure future food production: UN has estimated the world will need at least 50% more food by 2050. In addition, global warming will diminish the area of suitable farmland. Combined, these two will mean that more energy will be required to produce enough food to feed the world as global warming will lead more crops to have to turn to greenhouses as the global climate becomes less suitable for growing various produce. Through our controlled greenhouse designed to use less energy by 65% compared to conventional farming, we expect our greenhouses to contribute to the future of food production. 2. Reduce poverty and inequalities: While over 40% of the population is employed in agriculture in Asia, the income gap has widened between rural and urban population as the majority of farmers are still small-scale family-run businesses with little pricing power. By developing an affordable greenhouse to produce value-added produce such as strawberries, we aim to raise farmer income and create additional jobs.

The solution
Affordable and clean energy controlled environment greenhouses for value-add produce such as strawberries

OPT/NET B.V.

Telecommunications, Agri tech

Description:

We provide an AI Ops platform to ensure continuity of your most critical IT infrastructures

The problem
The health of a telecom network is illustrated by the billions of log lines and performance indicators it outputs every day. Teams of System Operators are tasked with sifting through this veritable ocean of data in order to manage these critical networks and ensure zero down-time. Human operators simply cannot manage the colossal amounts of data in real-time to uncover the “needle in a haystack” that may ultimately lead to a service disruption. For telecom operators, ensuring reliable network availability is imperative in order to consistently gain new customers and maintain the trust of existing customers. But the reality today is that most network operators are typically working in a ‘reactive mode’ fighting proverbial fires, often only responding to major disruptions after many customers start complaining. Not only does this poor quality of service negatively impact the customer’s perception of the brand, but in some cases, it may even lead to costly breaches of SLA’s.

The solution
The OPT/NET BV team comprises telecom network experts that have over 50 years of combined experience in the industry. Having served and protected the networks of clients all over the globe, the OPT/NET team was especially suited to develop advanced AI products capable of dealing with an ever-increasing volume of data and complexity. Initially serving as a tool for our own telecom consulting practice, OptOSS AI has grown into a stand-alone platform that is truly best-in-class. OptOSS AI is an Artificial Intelligence enabled platform for monitoring, analysing, and managing complex networks in real-time. Both structured and unstructured time-series data can be streamed into OptOSS AI, where irregular patterns are detected within 2s of the data being received. A patented process helps to detect, cluster, label, and recognise millions of known and unknown irregularities that crop up on critical infrastructures and to distill the gist of meaning helping human operators in their daily jobs. Crucially, the majority of new and repeating issues are automatically spotted by OptOSS AI, without the need for clean labeled training data. Spotting the unexpected, noticing the unknown patterns is where OptOSS AI excels, often surprising even its creators.

Qpinch

Energy

Description:

Breakthrough heatpump for the process industries (petrochemicals, food & beverages, paper & pulp…)

The problem
The industry consumes around 25% of all energy, and much of this is heat – not electricity – to drive large-scale processes in many areas and primarily produced with fossil fuels. This energy is mostly required 24/7 and in enormous quantities (from a few to dozens or even hundreds of megawatts per plant). By 2050 at the latest, all these processes will have to be operated with zero emissions. There are two main solutions to this problem: large-scale energy efficiency and replacing fossil fuels with 24/7 clean energy. In some industries, Carbon Capture & Storage will also be needed.

The solution
Consultancies such as McKinsey, Solomon & Associates, Deloitte, and organizations like the IEA and Concawe state that energy efficiency is not only needed to reach the 2050 targets, but it is the only short-term solution to curb emissions. Besides, it also reduces OpEx as opposed to green energy and CCS. Qpinch has invented a new heat pump for large-scale energy efficiency and emissions reductions for a significant part of the industry. Using a reversible chemical reaction inspired by nature’s energy system – the ATP-ADP cycle – our solution overcomes the hurdles that other solutions face: it achieves very high temperatures, large temperature jumps, and is exceptionally scalable (up to 100+ megawatts). Our clients now have a new tool to reduce their emissions and operational cost throughout their global assets with double-digits.

SolarDew

Water, energy

Description:

SolarDew’s solar desalination products provide clean drinking water from saline water for families and communities

The problem
Water scarcity and increasing salinity of the groundwater currently affects 700 million people and potentially 4 billion in 2030! People in rural communities from Latin America to the South Asia, and from North Africa to the Pacific, are getting left behind due to a lack of cost-effective small-scale solutions for their drinking water needs. This is especially in areas where water is saline, brackish or chemically contaminated (ex. arsenic, fluoride, heavy metals, etc). They are searching for a fresh water source, almost on a daily basis, or buying water, which sometimes have to be transported over large distances. This is expensive, time consuming and unsustainable. Most water purification technologies are only suitable to eliminate biological contamination or can only handle brackish water with a relatively low TDS. The desalination technologies that are available, either have a high water price (>4 cents per liter), a high initial investment, are complex with frequent down time and thus require regular maintenance. Air to Water technologies are not always suitable for the arid and water scarce regions and the water price for small scale systems is more than 10 cents per liter. For small scale desalination there is still a need for a simple, robust and reliable product for households and off grid communities.

The solution
People need a product that is simple, affordable, robust and easy to use. SolarDew started with these basic user requirements to develop a novel solar membrane distillation technology. It can produce clean drinking water from seawater in a single step simply by evaporating and condensating water through a membrane. SolarDew’s products can be rapidly deployed as a compact, inflatable product after a natural disaster or as a permanent source of drinking water for households and communities. With these products, people can directly purify their local ground water thus becoming more independent and healthier, whilst saving time and money. The unique aspects of the technology are: – A low cost membrane which requires minimal maintanenace. – Direct Integration of the solar thermal and water purification process to create a solid state system which does not require electrical or mechanical parts. – Simple and low cost construction which can be manufactured roll to roll on the same lines used to produce packaging.

Vertical Future

Food

Description:

Developer of smart food technology intended to spearhead sustainable food production. The company’s technology develops, commercializes and uses technology to produce food in controlled environments using sustainable methods, with a long-term commitment to improving health and reducing CO2 emissions in cities, enabling customers to improve their long-term health.

The problem
Vertical Future addresses a wide range of health, economic, environmental, and social issues. The average temperature globally is expected to increase by between 3 and 5 degrees over the next century and we are already feeling the effects of crop failure in exporting countries. This has not only affected farmers in these countries, but also the price, availability, and quality of produce on the supermarket shelves of importing countries. The global population is growing and populations are concentrating around urban areas, placing more pressure on scarce resources. This has led to the need to rethink the way that urban areas are structured and how we design supply chains to align with these new norms. Agricultural practices have for some time been intensifying and, linked to climate change, we are experiencing a loss of biodiversity and the dying out of key insect and wildlife populations that are critical to the balance of the natural world. Sustainable, ethical, and commercially-viable solutions must be sought to these many issues, and this is where controlled-environment-agriculture has a role to play.

The solution
We empower people and businesses to grow food in a more sustainable, secure, efficient and effective way – closer to the point of consumption and with a lower environmental footprint. We do this through combining our advanced hardware and software solutions with our years of growing experience, high-class team, and innovative programme of cross-sector research. Considering a lot of the shortcoming exhibited by ‘Generation 1’ vertical farming companies and systems, we have focused our technologies and value propositions on the greatest areas of need: automation, energy, water, and operational best practice. We envisage a world of many micro/circular economies, where energy, waste, food, education, and water are all local, sustainable solutions, irrespective of demographics or a person’s socioeconomic status.

Wasser 3.0 gGmbH

Chemicals, plastic

Description:

Wasser 3.0 offers solutions to detect | remove | reuse microplastics and micropollutants from waters.

The problem
It is time to address the downsides of mass production, mass consumption and improper or non-existent disposal and reuse systems in a responsible and systemic manner. More and more microplastics and micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, pesticides, fertilizers, per- and polyfluorinated compounds (PFAS), pollute our water cycle and ecosystems. They pose an enormous risk to human health and the environment. Microplastics are currently one of the most discussed environmental problems. Nevertheless, we lack efficient and sustainable solutions and approaches dealing with them. In particular, we lack (waste)water treatment systems that are fit to deal with these highly complex pollution scenarios; a uniform, applicable detection method; solutions to improve process controlling of existing systems; continuous and standardized monitoring; as well as clear and binding legislation for discharge of microplastic-contaminated waters from different (industrial) processes. As of now, microplastics´ inflow into our waters and ecosystems is an almost entirely uncontrolled and uncontrollable process – the same applies for many micropollutants.

The solution
Wasser 3.0 gGmbH enables new levels of environmental and health protection in (waste) water treatment by combining high-tech materials, low-tech processes, and a systemic perspective under the umbrella of our microplastic and micropollutant strategy detect | remove | reuse. Our focus lies on cost- and energy-efficient, easily applicable, and pollution-tailored solutions for the removal of microplastics and micropollutants from waters, including detection methods and reuse concepts. Bringing detect | remove | reuse to its full potential is the impact we thrive for: Clean and accessible water worldwide and a closed loop in the field of circular economy and zero waste – i.e., less water consumption, less wastewater and waste (costs), and a secondary material reuse of the extracted substances.
