People always ask how we’re able to find and pick the best startups from all over the world and the truth is, it’s hard work, but unmasking startup heroes and discovering incredible innovations makes it all worthwhile.
Our scouting process involves a lot of components and each process is meticulously planned. But for now, we wanted to give you a quick snapshot of what it takes to review 10,000 startup applications, and end up with 150 ultimate heroes.
The best thing about scouting is it never gets boring. Every year we scout and review thousands of startups. For each challenge we launch, we are scouting a completely different set of startups – healthcare, green tech, automotive, robotics… – no working day is the same.
Being so multi-faceted means we have expertise in many different industries and have the opportunity to continually learn and improve.
Now, I’ll let you in on a little secret; judging startups isn’t actually fun.
We want to support as many entrepreneurs as we can, so reviewing their applications is always difficult. Even though a startup may not be right for this challenge, we know there is a global challenge out there in need of their innovation.
No matter what the outcome, we will always offer a breakdown of our scouting process and feedback of how you can improve your pitch in future.
Giving constructive feedback like this is one thing we believe sets us apart from other scouting partners. A ‘no’ from one challenge could mean a ‘yes’ for another challenge – it’s never the end of the road.
Luckily, we have a team of experts with years of experience in reviewing startups, and spotting true entrepreneurial talent.
We spoke to one of our Global Meetup special visitors, James Caan, about his experience reviewing startups as an investor and former U.K Dragon:
