For 6 years, The New Energy Challenge has been bringing together the best European and Israeli startups and scale-ups that are shaping the energy system of the future. Together with Shell, Rockstart, and Yes!Delft, with this challenge we aim to fast-track the development of innovations that are accelerating the energy transition.
This year, we scouted over 3000 startups and scale-ups from Europe and Israel to find the most promising energy solutions for the final pitch to the jury during the finals event on October 28th.
We are thrilled to announce the winners of the New Energy Challenge 2021:
Finland’s Geyser Batteries. The startup offers high-power heavy-duty energy storage solutions based on novel proprietary water-based electrolyte and unique engineering and manufacturing.
English scale-up Everimpact, a scale-up which helps cities and industries measure, reduce, and monetize their greenhouse gas emissions, using loT software that combines satellite, ground sensors and AI data to determine their CO2 footprint.
For the first time ever, in addition to the two winners, two other finalists were also selected by the jury: startup Supercritical and scaleup FlexiDAO have also received collaboration offers!
Joep Huijsmans, General Manager Power of Shell Global Solutions International says: “It’s clear that the finalists came highly prepared – the pitches were of extremely high quality. The innovations are relevant for both the New Energy Challenge and for Shell and it’s actually a pity that we can’t have ten winners”.

Geert van de Wouw, Managing Director of Shell Ventures said: “This year we have again been deeply impressed by the talent and innovation that the finalists have demonstrated. Every one of them is working on promising solutions for the energy transition. So much so that we have decided to potentially develop a pilot with two scale-up companies”
The New Energy Challenge mission is to support young, innovative companies. After all, they can help stimulate the economic recovery from the global COVID-19 recession by growing businesses based on affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy. Startups and scale-ups have, and will continue to have, a vital role in developing technologies for the energy system of the future.
