Biomaterials can be natural or synthetic and are used to support, enhance, or replace damaged tissue or a biological function. The modern field of biomaterials combines medicine, biology, physics, and chemistry.
It is a field that is developing quickly, and the possibilities are endless. For now, biomaterials allow us, for instance, to detect the presence and amount of specific substances in the body using biosensors. Or carry and apply drugs to a specific disease target, with drug-delivery systems. We can also regenerate human tissue or promote its healing.
Innovation
To understand a bit more where biomaterials can lead us, let’s that a look at some promising innovators working on the field. Stentit has developed the first stent with regenerative capacity. A stent is a metal or plastic tube inserted into a vessel to keep the passage open. But Stentit does more than just keep the passage open, it actually regenerates the vessel.
Artificial Nature also works with biomaterials, in this case by using natural primary materials and sustainable with the environment, such as algae or residual organic materials, enhancing circular economy.
